Common questions

When should I carve my pumpkin for Halloween?

For most of Ohio, carve between October 26 and October 29. A carved pumpkin holds its face for roughly 5 to 9 days at typical late-October temperatures, so carving the weekend before Halloween puts it at its best on the night without risking collapse.

How long does a carved pumpkin last?

About 3 days above 80°F, 5 to 6 days in the 60s and 70s, and up to 12 days when daytime highs stay below 50°F. Indoors it is closer to 5 days regardless of the weather, because heated air is warm and dry.

Does anything make a carved pumpkin last longer?

An overnight soak in bleach water — about a teaspoon per gallon — adds roughly 3 days by slowing mould. Petroleum jelly on the cut edges seals in moisture and adds about 2.

Should I carve earlier if the pumpkin sits outside?

Later, not earlier. Cold outdoor air preserves a pumpkin far better than a heated house, so an outdoor jack-o-lantern in a cool week can be carved sooner and still last. In a warm spell, carve as late as you can.
